What is Islam?
Islam did not begin with Muhammad ﷺ. Islam means submitting your will to God and a Muslim is someone who does so. In this sense, all prophets—from Adam to Muhammad—were Muslim: they obeyed God and called others to do the same.

From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ, Islam teaches that every prophet called their people to worship God alone.
Called people to worship one God.
Called people to worship one true God and reject idols.
“God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.”
Genesis 14:22“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
Deuteronomy 6:4“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God besides you.”
2 Samuel 7:22“…so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and there is no other.”
1 Kings 8:60“that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
John 17:3“I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
John 20:17“I can do nothing on my own. …because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”
John 5:30For centuries, Rome had worshipped gods and demigods. To unify his empire, Emperor Constantine I gathered church leaders in 325 CE and blended Roman pagan customs with Christianity—formally declaring Jesus as the divine Son of God and marking the beginning of the deviation.
Emperor Theodosius I called another council, formally adding the Holy Spirit to complete the doctrine of the Trinity.
The final messenger, sent to guide people back to worshipping God alone after they had turned to worshipping people and idols.
“O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not say anything about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah and His word which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit proceeding from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say: 'Three'. Stop! That is better for you. Allah is only one God. Glory be to Him above having a son! To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth. And Allah is sufficient as a Trustee of Affairs.”
Peace be upon them all.

Jesus is the Messiah and a prophet sent by God. He performed miracles by God’s permission. His message was to worship God alone, just as the prophets before him taught.
Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet in a long line of prophets sent to call people to obey and worship God alone.
Allah is the Creator of heaven, earth, and everything in them. It is the Arabic name for God, and it is the name He Almighty chose for Himself.
The Quran is God’s direct, final revelation to humanity, sent to Muhammad ﷺ—the literal word of Allah, not the words of Muhammad ﷺ. Unlike previous scriptures, it is preserved in its original Arabic language exactly as revealed. Millions of people have memorized it word-for-word, ensuring it has been passed down through generations without a single letter changed.
“This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance for the God-fearing.”
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
“We will show them Our signs across the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.”
“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām.”
“Say, He is Allāh—One.”
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
“And We sent not before you [O Muhammad] any messenger except We revealed to him that, ‘There is no god [worthy of worship] except Me, so worship Me.’”
“There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.”
“Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him alone. This is the Straight Path.”
“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allāh is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.”
“They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘Allāh is the third of three.’ And there is no god except one God.”
“The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. [Many] messengers had [come and] gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded [from the truth]!”
“The believers are those who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.”
“Do people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe,’ and will not be tested?”
“Indeed, Allāh does not wrong people in the least, but it is people who wrong themselves.”
“Every soul shall taste death. And you shall only be paid your rewards in full on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has indeed triumphed.”
